It is a fact that a majority of Sub-Saharan Africa is Christian due to various forms of colonization and missionary work done by hundreds of organizations. The trade of food, education, and hospital services for conversions to Christianity which is preached as "doing God's work". This spread of Christianity along with the message of "abstinence" removed any chance of sex education entering these societies.
The Church has fueled the spread of AIDS.
In a religion, where masturbation is seen as a sin and having sex before marriage is seen as a lesser sin because of western civilizations examples on the matter, many people will end up having sex instead of abstaining completely. The spread of the teaching that "using condoms is a sin" or absolutely avoiding contraceptive education in hopes that abstaining will be enough, is the biggest disservice that is being done to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
What person with common sense would spread this message?
The church has long been opposed to the use of condoms and other forms of birth control because it strongly believes that sex is for procreation and enriching the union of a married couple. But for the church to continue to ignore the definitive research that shows how condoms play a huge role in decreasing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases is mind-boggling.

The pope said this about HIV/AIDS: "You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, it increases the problem."
Is this the man that we should listen to when scientific evidence shows otherwise? Blindly leading people with a teaching that will ultimately result in infection, lower life expectancy, and death.
This willingness to ignore overwhelming factual evidence shakes the foundation that religions like Christianity sit on and will continue to erode their following in the future.
